Colin Norman
CANSI Level II, NCCP L2T, Foothills Nordic Masters Head Coach
Coaching Highlights: Colin has been skiing for 37 years and a coach with Foothills Nordic Ski Club for the past five. He runs a Master’s training program at Foothills focused on having fun and racing.
Favourite Trail Snack: Home-made cookies
Racing background highlights: He realized, relatively late, that a bit of technique development would vastly augment his fitness and began learning in earnest the technical aspects of the sport. He has raced successful as a Master at the provincial level and enjoys skiing on new trails at long loppets where friendly volunteers pass out the Gatorade (and home-made cookies).
What Colin loves about skiing: Colin is a passionate weekend warrior, which can sometimes get out of hand. (Is skiing just an excuse to wear off wax so I can justify another session in the basement with the waxing iron?) To get fresh air, he loves to ski with his family and spread the joy of a long glide by coaching all levels of skiers.

Denys Lawrence

Hometown: Montreal, QC
Denys is a multi-sport athlete who has lived and worked at Silver Star Mountain for over 30 years. He now lives in Johnsons Landing, BC, where he and his wife Monika run the Johnsons Landing Retreat Center. He is an enthusiastic coach and instructor, who believes that while instruction can do much, encouragement can do more.
Denys has been travelling throughout British Columbia, running cross country certification courses & ski improvement clinics. He also attended Interski 2019 in Pamporovo, Bulgaria, and Interski 2023 in Levi, Finland. An enthusiastic booster of all things Silver Star and Sovereign Lake, Denys is overjoyed to be part of the Supercamp team.

Dudley Coulter
Dudley is passionate about skiing as both a recreational pastime, and a sport. A youthful and personable instructor, he draws knowledge from his own experience as a member of the National Team Development Centre in Thunder Bay, and more recently his involvement with Cross Country BC and development of a U35’s program at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre.
Eric Schryer
Head Biathlon Coach & Program Director: Sovereign Lake Nordic Club / Sovereign Lake Nordic Development Centre. Biathlon NCCP biathlon competition development certified (5+ years).
Eric has coached at a club, training centre, and Canadian team level for his entire career. He has coached at the Canada Winter Games, World Youth & Junior Championships, The Jr. IBU Cup, and the IBU cup for team Canada. His team continues to grow in success with multiple athletes having represented Canada at World Junior Championships and the Youth Olympic Games.
What you love about skiing: Gliding on snow. Pow days (especially on the fat skis). Ski friends and skijouring with my doggo.

Gary Chambers

Coaching Highlights:
Upon completing his Physical Education Degree Gary administered and programmed for the Strathcona Wilderness center and AusCan Ski School in downtown Edmonton. After a number of years in Edmonton he moved to the Canmore Nordic Center where he spent many years teaching full time at Trail Sports at the Canmore Nordic Center. Having taken a break from teaching Gary is excited to be back on the snow teaching and coaching this winter at Supercamps

Facts and Background:
Gary owns and operates a 2500 acre 4th generation grain farm central Alberta. He is the host of the #FitFarmer Podcast on Real Agriculture and is a passionate life long learner sharing his knowledge on his blog TractorView. He has been a competitive mountain bike racer spending the last 20 years racing with DeadGoat Racing out of Calgary, AB. Most recently he has completed and placed top 10 in SingleTrack 6 (2014/15/16/17), Breck Epic 2018, Frosty and Nipika Fat bike Races 2018. On a bet over a couple beer Gary raced his first marathon in the summer of 2019 in Banff and placed 5th overall. At my core I am a thoroughbred athlete with a passion for sharing and making others smile.
What I love about skiing is the perfect balance of quiet mind, pounding heart, and complete focus on the skis gliding across the snow.
George Young
CSIA Level 3, CSIA Level 1 Course Conductor, CANSI XC Level 3, Tele Level 2, CSCF Level 2
George has taught skiing since 1961 and is multi-certified in XC, DH, and Telemark skiing. He has skied extensively in Europe and all across North America. Calling Silver Star home for the last 40 years, George is proud to be part of the coaching team on the best high altitude terrain in the country. Sliding on snow is his way of life!
Fun Fact: George has skied in every month of the year, including some sand dune experience.

Greg Munby
CANSI IV, MEd
Greg is beyond excited to return as a Supercamp for his seventh season to meet more wonderful skiers from across North America. During the ski season you can find him logging long miles (i.e. skiing every trail at Silverstar and Sovereign in one day with David Allen) or backcountry skiing around his home in Nelson, BC. In the off-season, he’s likely planning a biology lesson for his high school students, training for his next ultramarathon, or stuffing dry bags into his whitewater kayak.

Guy Paulsen

Guy is the first Canadian to attain top-level certification in all three winter ski disciplines: Telemark, Cross Country and Alpine. With over 30 years of teaching & coaching experience, Guy has represented Canada internationally at numerous skiing events. His strong alpine background has lent credibility to his Nordic & Telemark pursuits with the Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors. Most importantly Guy is known for his expert and individual approach and enjoys skiing with guests of all ages & abilities.
Heather Lamson
CANSI Level 4, Fisheries Biologist
Coaching Highlights
Heather has instructed adult Nordic skiing since 2008 and coordinates the adult ski
program in Kimberley, BC. After skiing her first loppet in 2002, she fell in love with
the Nordic ski community and has medaled at Masters World Cups in Norway and
Canmore.
Heather has a good eye for detection and correction of ski technique for both
recreational skiing and racing. Her experience and knowledge of training
development stems from bike racing in her 20’s and coaching adults nordic skiing
more recently.
In the off season, Heather works as a fisheries biologist in the Kootenays and her
favourite projects involve researching and conserving wild, native fish species.
Ian MacDonald

Hometown: Nelson, BC
Ian is a returning Supercamp coach who loves giving back to his club by coaching skill development clinics and helping with the junior racers for Nelson Nordic ski club. You can always find him out on the trails working on his latest technique drills and searching for the best snow! He got his start with skiing through his racing career as a competitive skier and biathlete, and has competed with many other Supercamp coaches.
Cool Fact About Ian: When he’s not on skis, you can find him rock climbing in every spare minute he has!
Ingrid Granlin
CANSI Level III, PSIA Level III, NCCP Level 2 CC Facilitator
Ingrid grew up ski racing and exploring the backcountry in Smithers BC and has taught XC in California, Oregon, Alberta, Switzerland and BC. She now resides in Bend, Oregon where here she runs the programs at the Mt Bachelor Nordic center and specializes in teaching amazing women how to better their skating technique. Her favorite goal is to get students to the efficiency level where skiing becomes fun and not just a great workout!
When she’s not teaching the masses excellent Nordic ski technique you’ll find Ingrid exploring the Central Oregon backcountry on alpine touring gear, mountain bike or her trusty enduro motorcycle, Roxy.
Jessica Stichelbout
CANSI level IV and Course Conductor level IV, CSIA Level I, NCCP level 1 and instructor certified. Graduate of Theater school for production. Raised on a dairy farm!
Coaching Highlight/ Ski Experiences:
Represented Canada at INTERSKI (ski instructor world event) in Finland 2023. Tour de d’un in Europe racing recreationally. Loppet races all over BC. Organized fundraiser xc ski event for local club.
What you love about skiing: The skiing community and my beautiful ski friends. The feeling of gliding. Diamonds in the snow on a sunny day. The post ski tea and treats with friends. The amazing places skiing takes you to. The priceless look on a beginner face when they first glide. Teaching school groups- getting kids skiing. The technical aspect of skiing and all the nuances.
Fav trail snack or ski trail: Dark chocolate (preferably Swiss) of any form and/with nuts or dates. Apple studdels and Stroopwaffles with tea if possible.
I looooove dressing up to ski. From Wildebeest to Pinguin, Chicken or Bee, Cowgirl or Superwomen outfits, the tickle trunk never disappoints in brining smiles on people’s faces.
Jocelyn Marcotte

Coaching highlights: I coach primarily in Gatineau Park with Skinouk SKI+. I enjoy seeing my students progress and witnessing the occasional «Eureka» moment when a student suddenly understands something they had been struggling with.
Favourite Trail Snack: I enjoy granola bars, any one that isn't too hard to chew when frozen.
For instance, Clif Bars are filling but too hard to chew except for pit bulls.
Fun Facts: I love endurance challenges! I have completed the Gatineau Loppet and the Canadian Ski Marathon multiple times, cycled across Canada in the summer of 2013, and participated in Randonneur cycling events. I love British Columbia and seem to always be returning here. The people and the geography make it a destination he enjoys very much. SilverStar and Sovereign Lake being the favourite, of course.
Why skiing? I enjoy the cool clean winter air and the silent stillness that winter brings. The silence only punctuated by the sound of my breath and that of my skis on the snow. It is so satisfying to me to be able to travel from one point to the other through my own efforts.
Karen Messenger

Karen's motto, "Carpe Skiem", has led her to ski, instruct, coach, and race around the world. Her passion is helping her students have the best time on snow ever - everyday can be a "Tour de Fun!" Karen lives in Canmore, where she coaches for the local clubs and ski shop. She has been coaching with SuperCamp since 2013. In the summer season, Karen is most likely to be found in her canoe or enjoying swims in the refreshing alpine lakes and rivers.

Cool Fact About Keith: I have been on 4 Canadian Demo Teams for x-c skiing representing Canada at INTERSKI. I was also the first CANSI instructor to achieve Level 4 and Level 3 in track and tele skiing respectively.
Keith loves skiing because of the flow of both skating and classic skiing, and sharing that with skiers who want to improve.
Mae Hooper
Mae is a Vernon local, spending a large part of her week on Sovereign’s trails chasing down her daughter, Hannah. Hannah recently went to World Juniors and is a member of the Junior National Team. You can always find them putting in miles on the mountain with the biggest smiles!
Coaching Highlights: A really happy customer makes the time, effort, enthusiasm for the sport and high level of care all worthwhile. It helps me feel like I really love what I am doing!
Favourite Trail Snack: Almond Fudge Cliff Bar (with the orange wrapping) really helps me to keep up with Hannah (my daughter) on her 3 hour distance skis. We’re slow to start but endurance comes with age!
Racing Background Highlights: Sometimes I will do a replay of the 2011 World Masters and really kick it into gear at the bottom of Carl Wylie, pretending that I’m in the race again and Mike Bell is on the top of the course cheering me on. He was saying just the right words to make me go for that silver medal! I hear those words over and over again, “You’re killing it Mae!”
What I love about skiing: Every day is a good day on the snow. My favourite is when it is quiet and you are going through the forest and huge snowflakes are falling. I love how cross country skiing empowers you in your life – it makes you so strong! It is a very challenging and technical sport, using your entire body.

For the last 9 years, Matt has been instructing Nordic skiing for all ages. He is on a mission to find the “Holy Grail” of Nordic ski technique perfection. He attended SUPERCAMPS 2 years in a row, he made the leap in becoming a CANSI ski instructor to be coaching with us. His passion for the sport shines through in every session, whether you’re refining your skills or starting out on the trails.

Michelle loves sharing her passion for skiing with adults and children, helping folks achieve their ski goals and seeing the (self) confidence that skiing brings to people’s lives. A lifelong multi-sport athlete, Michelle took up competitive cross-country skiing as an adult, participating in numerous regional events.
Coaching Highlights: Supercamp (SUPER FUN!); nearly a decade with Foothills Nordic Ski Club – adult programs and youth skill development programs; supporting new Community Coaches in their development; and Ski at School – a most rewarding program that brings skiing to local school yards and is often a child’s first experience on skis.
Cool fact about Michelle: Michelle is a physical literacy keener. Developing it early fosters a lifetime of participation and achievement of potential. While more difficult to achieve as adults, Michelle tries to apply foundational physical literacy elements to coaching encouraging adult learners to constantly develop their agility, balance, coordination and rhythm – also the foundations of the best skiers!

Mike is a past Olympic coach of the Canadian National Nordic Team & former CANSI XC Interski Demo Team Member (Captain) / Examiner. Mike has become a driving force with the BC Masters XC Ski Association. His wax technician abilities at the XC World Masters in recent years has proven to help his athletes and students to continuously improve their skills. His catchphrase is: “ski smart and ski smooth!”

Started skiing 1978 in the backcountry and took an interest in Nordic skiing as my children grew up and started competing. Skied in my first official 50 km Loppet in 1984 and placed 3rd women overall – this was the beginning of my interest in improving my skiing technique in order to ski faster.
As A Coach:
Served as the Head Coach Bulkley Valley Nordics – 3 years
Led a Junior Provincial team on a Norwegian tour and to the Junior Nationals in the States in the year 2000; selected as a Provincial Coach for the Canada Winter Games in the same year, and coached several junior athletes who earned podium results in the Canadian Junior Nationals.
As a result of the above coaching, I was the recipient of the Cross Country Canada Firth Award in 2000. This award is given to a woman who has made an outstanding contribution to cross country skiing in Canada during that year.
Currently, I am a mentor for the Masters Program at SLNC.

Reidar Zapf-Gilje

From his early days of skiing in Norway, Reidar has followed his passion in Canada in XC ski racing, coaching, instructing and ski trail design. The highlight in racing was the World Masters in Canmore, where he won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals in four races. Highlights in ski trail design included legacy trails for the Whistler Olympic Park.
Coaching Highlights
XC Supercamp is awesome! Meeting and coaching keen skiers on the best early season snow and trails in North America is heaven. In my focus on coaching ski technique improvements, I like to leave my skiers with the vision of quick-and-easy floating up the hill. “Climbing hills is easier than you think” is my motto!

Not having a sweet tooth, I prefer nuts and dried fruits and berries (unsweetended). For longer ski outings I pack ryebread with Geitost – the Norwegian secret to XC ski success.
Favourite Ski Trails at Silverstar/Sovereign Lake
Of the 105 km of Nordic Trails (one of Canada largest), there is lot to chose from. A favourite of mine is the cross mountain trek starting with a quick-and-easy climb up from Silverstar on “Comin’ Round The Mountain” and then cruising along “Lars Taylor Way” to the Sovereign Lake trails. It is a trek I like to take my group on.
Fun Facts
In the summer, Reidar’s cross training includes competing in master track and field events. He is the past winner of Master Male Athlete of the Year in Multi-events in Canada (pentathlon and decathlon).
Sandy Cook
CANSI Level IV, CSIA Level 3, TELE Level 1, CSCF Level 2
Sandy has been coaching at Supercamps for 28 years and Silver Star has been her home for 30 years – raising her family and being involved with the Snowsports School. Many years were spent teaching and coaching in the east while attending university for kinesiology and engineering. Sandy is an accomplished paddler, cyclist (MTB / road), and enjoys trail running.
Shane Landreville
CANSI XC Level 4, Telemark Level 3, CSCF Level 2. BA in Psychology.
Former member of Canada’s National Telemark Team; reigning National Telemark Champion (sprint classic).
Shane is a passionate and enthusiastic coach of various snow sports and brings a new perspective to the Supercamp coaching team. As a former racer on Canada’s World Cup Telemark Team, Shane was driven to improve his nordic skiing and was coached and mentored by many of Supercamp’s best instructors promoting a passion and understanding of the cross over between disciplines. Shane’s ability to connect with all ages & abilities and his high energy help Supercamps skiers reach their highest goals.
Sheila Kealey

You can see Sheila’s smile on the ski trail from miles away. She is an incredible athlete and a wealth of knowledge regarding training, nutrition, and skiing.
Coaching Highlights: I have over 20 years of coaching experience, and Supercamp 2017 was a definite highlight so I’m thrilled to be returning in 2018! My current nordic ski coaching includes uOttawa Nordiq Head Coach and Nakkertok Nordic Coach.

Cool fact about Sheila: I still love to compete! Beyond skiing, I love good food (I have co-authored a Cookbook/Food Guide and share recipes on my website) and am involved in health research. My experience as a researcher keeps my coaching, training, and nutrition communication grounded in science, which I communicate on twitter and my website.
I love skiing because I love being outside on ski trails and beyond soaking in the beauty of nature, I like challenging my body’s balance, agility, and fitness. While Troy has been off the market as a coach for the last few years he brings passion, enthusiasm
and a huge smile to his clinics. Troy also enjoys being out on his bikes, throwing down some riffs on his trumpet, climbing in the mountains with his two kids or most likely out on his sailboat during the non snowy months. Troy has the good fortune to be the new General Manager at Sovereign Lake Nordic Club as of January 2015. He looks forward to hosting you on the outstanding system of ski trails. Wendy has a deep love of any outdoor activity, particularly if it involves sliding on snow or water. She has competed at over 15 World Masters events, is the Ontario Director of the Canadian Masters Association, and on the Board of CANSI Ontario. She has twice ski toured across Baffin Island’s Auyuittuq National Park. She owns and operates Canada’s premier wilderness travel company, Black Feather – the Wilderness Adventure Company.
Coaching Highlights:
As well as coaching at the 2018 Supercamps, I work as a CANSI course conductor, leading level I and II courses. I am founder and head instructor at the Georgian Nordic Ski Club’s Women on Skis day, which has been an annual event for 20 years. I also coach the instructor teams at the North Toronto and High Park Ski Clubs.
Favourite Trail Snack: Peanut butter Granola bars from Beamer’s Café in Canmore! They are amazing, and stay soft enough to eat, even at -30 degrees! Wash it down with Licorice spice tea!
Recent Skiing Adventures:
Last year, I did a ski tour in Norway … the Troll’s Trail. This 8 day tour was incredible, skiing in the birthplace of Nordic skiing. The trail climbed above treeline into the fjells, and each night we stayed in a cozy hut or inn. To top it off, then skied the 54 km Birkebeiner Loppet. What a way to celebrate skiing!
